Been noticing a huge influx of Japanese coins in the international market as the Yen is so weak and everyone and their mum is going to Japan to take advantage. But be aware - there are still people who want to take advantage of you. There are a lot of varieties, types and fakes to learn about - old and new type. Doing research on these is even harder since there is hardly any English literature. I hope to do a talk about these one day and help people identify authentic from fake pieces. But for now, weight, colour, craftsmanship and knowledge of calligraphy is a bare minimum to collect these safely.

Egypt - (2004) 1 Pound (0.720 Ag) Military Production Golden Jubilee coin. Since the bronze age and into the classical era, one of the strongest weapons of war was the chariot. Usually pulled by 2-4 horses and 2 or more riders, battles were decided by the presence of these vehicles. Many civilisations used it including but not limited to the Egyptians, Hittites, The Celts and there is even evidence of their use in China as shown by their presence in the Terracotta army tomb. Their most famous use was during the bronze age in the Mediterranean. However, they had many drawbacks. They were expensive to build and maintain. You had to feed and supply horses and men and the loss of a single chariot could take years to replace. These major flaws were one of the reasons for the Bronze age collapse, which saw their defeat at the hands of "the sea people". But it is a testament to their prowess in battle that they were present and in use across the old world from England to China for many thousands of years and are still known as legendary weapons of war to this day.

Coins are small, fascinating windows into histories toy never even knew existed and can stretch the limits of your knowledge so quickly. Here are two examples: Danish India Copper Cash coins. From Wikipedia:- Danish India was the name given to the forts and factories of Denmark (Denmark–Norway before 1814) in the Indian subcontinent, forming part of the Danish overseas colonies. Denmark–Norway held colonial possessions in India for more than 200 years, including the town of Tharangambadi in present-day Tamil Nadu state, Serampore in present-day West Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands, currently part of India's union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The final picture is one of those forts, Fort Dansborg. The Danish and Norwegian presence in India was of little significance to the major European powers as they presented neither a military nor a mercantile threat. Dano-Norwegian ventures in India, as elsewhere, were typically undercapitalized and never able to dominate or monopolize trade routes in the same way that British, French, and Portuguese ventures could. It's cool to see this aspect of the age of sail that isn't given much notice, but still played an important part of history. #numismatics #numismatique #coins #coinsforsale #coins4sale #numismatica #numismatico #coincollecting #coin #silvercoin #silver #silvermoney #ancientcoins #antiquecoins #antique #oldmoney #oldcoins #denmark #india #forts #history #copper #coppercoins #monarchy #empire #sail #tallships

This charm the size of a quarter features an abacus, bowl, book, ruler and hand scale for weighing goods and money for purchases, all neatly organised on a bamboo wicker basket. The purpose? The merchant would hide it in their cap or belt to bring good luck to their business. Such a cute little token, well handmade and wonderfully wrought. Another fun aspect is I have half of these real tools at home already! Japanese Meiji Era (1868-69) Edo period 2 Bu gold coin. Hand hammered. DDR/off-centre strike on right-hand side of the obverse. I've drawn an arrow to indicate this. See the 3rd photo for what a "normal" coin would look like. A theory from a die strike expert: "I think the blank planchett was resting on the reverse die when the obverse die struck the coin the first time. This strike was off-centre, meaning that while the reverse was perfectly centred, the obverse was not. The coiner probably thought "Oh no!", struck the coin again slightly off centre but closer to normal. The reverse received a double strike because it shifted slightly off of the die from the impact of the first strike. Or maybe the coiner shifted it after picking it up and inspected it before putting it back for the 2nd hit." China - (1917) Yokohama Specie Bank $10 PMG VF 25 Extremely rare banknote from Hankow province in China. This Japanese bank was set up in China with the partial goal of helping to fund military operations such as the Russo-Japanese war, WW1 and then later China and the rest of Asia during the Sino-Japanese war and WW2. It also played a significant role in Japanese colonial ambitions and overseas trade. The funds were often used to buy military supplies and fund strategic operations around the continent and the Pacific. They even had a branch in Honolulu, which as seized after Pearl Habour. After WW2, the bank was rebranded as the Bank of Tokyo established by American occupation authorities before finally liquidating in 1963. For sale. Hong Kong (1940) 5 Dollar HSBC banknote. "Duress issue." When Hong Kong was invaded by the Japanese and fell in 1941, the Imperial army confiscated all metals, including coins, to fuel their war effort. This led to a shortage in circulating currency and until a substitute could be created (an occupation note) the soldiers forced staff at banks to continue issuing local notes. There are many stories of foreign and local citizens who lived in internment/prison camps but worked in offices under new Japanese management. Some worked for the underground or resistance and later paid with their lives. These "duress" notes were considered invalid by the British government for obvious reasons but as to not create unwanted economic difficulties on local citizens when the colony was liberated in 1945, the bank decided that any notes that fell into this time period were to be "honoured" by them. In order to do this, the bank had to pay back the difference in British Sterling to the tune of HKD$16 million. This greatly helped to restore public confidence in the economy and was in part one of the reasons for Hong Kong's rapid growth from 600,000 people to 1.6 million within 5 years. In the above picture you can see the major difference between the two notes is the vertical serial number on the right-hand side. Hong Kong has many unique, interesting and valuable banknotes and I hope to share more with you in the coming months. #numismatics #notaphilia #banknotes #Hongkong #history #Papermoney #ww2 antique #pmg #hsbc #香港

1917-1920s Chinese Early Republic Economics Guide book. This is a big shift from the usual medieval style guess work and understandings of western coins and business. Gone are the alchamaeic testing methods of checking silver. Gone are the phonetic translations of certain sounds from letters seen on coins. This book was used to teach a Chinese merchant how to be a player on the world stage of western business methodology. Clear type, accurate translations and proper numismatic analysis of the Cap and Ray 8 Reales - the most popular silver trade dollar at the time. Accurate conversion charts, translated goods terms, explainations of contracts and bills of sales. So much knowledge packed into 1 book and this is volume 24 of about 100. A great insight into what the Chinese were trying to do to modernise before being consumed by strife, civil war and invasion.
